The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey

This is the quintessential book of modern day. Dr. Covey shares those habits that the most effective people in the world have in common. Each habit stands on its own, and combined they truly are the leadership guides for today’s leader. From motivation to delegation to simply leading others.

The Eighth Habit by Stephen R. Covey

This is not about a missed habit — it is about how the world has grown since the original 7 Habits came out in 1989. As we move into the knowledge worker age (also known as the information age) each and every employee brings a valuable asset to the team and it is the responsibility of the leader to recognize and cull the most from everyone on the team.

Good to Great by Jim Collins

Every chapter is critical in this powerful book. With over 100 pages of appendix research, Jim Collins takes 11 companies that exploded with tremendous success and compares them with 11 other companies that did not fare so well. He found numerous similarities between them and shares these secrets. Chapter 3 — First Who Then What — outlines why it is sometimes better to leave a position empty rather than hire a warm body to fill the spot. An absolute must for any leader’s library.

Gung Ho! by Ken Blanchard

Dealing with a team of negativity and average producers. This very simple book takes you through the process of how to create the culture that dynamic teams are made of. An easy read by any standards.

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John C. Maxwell

John Maxwell takes you through the leadership process and gives simple examples of how to create them within ourselves. In Chapter Two he focuses on the “Law of Influence,” and that influence does not necessarily mean the manager. In fact, he clearly defines the difference between managing and leading, and points out that everyone has the capability of being a leader.

The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino

This book has nothing to do with and — yes — everything to do with sales. After all, we’re all in sales. This is one of the classics of all time. The foundation of this little book is communication and from communicating with ourselves to friends, family and co-workers. Another easy read.

Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson

The One Minute Manager by Ken Blanchard

Some of my favorite books are short and easy reads and this is no exception. In my mind this is the book every leader must read before they even begin their role as a leader. From the simple concept of praise in public and punish in private, this book sets the stage for what’s to come.

1001 Ways to Reward Employees by Bob Nelson

Without a doubt this is the best book for creative ways to motivate and energize employees. If you only utilize 10% of what is offered in this book you’ll be miles ahead of your competition.

The Bob Nelson 1001 Ways Library (3-book set) by Bob Nelson

Miracle, starring Kurt Russell (Teamwork and Leadership)

Without a doubt, this is the best movie to show the 4 stages (Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing) of team development. See how Herb Brooks takes a group of unknowns and cultivates the culture of teamwork, and in just 7 months leads them to defeat what many considered the greatest hockey team in the history of the game.

The Last Castle, starring Robert Redford (Leadership)

“What are the qualities that make a leader? What is the DNA, so to speak, of leadership?” Director Rod Lurie poses the questions that for him sum up the central theme of this movie. This powerful movie shows how leaders lead through influence and not through power. To expand on this movie be sure to read “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” by John Maxwell.

Finding Forrester, starring Sean Connery (Mentoring and Leadership)

One of Sean Connery’s best films. Here the reclusive author William Forrester (Sean Connery) becomes a mentor to young Jamal (Rob Brown) who is a street savvy basketball player and teen prodigy writer. In the movie Forrester never directs Jamal on what to do and in fact allows Jamal to make mistakes. Outstanding movie on how to mentor new emoloyees.

Drumline, starring Nick Cannon (Teamwork)

This movie shows how a team must be a community to accomplish the team goals and how a super star can actually bring down a team. In the movie Devon Miles (Nick Cannon) is a powerful drummer recruited from Harlem to be part of the band and his talents cause challenges until all of the team is united.

Remember the Titans, starring Denzel Washington (Teamwork and Leadership)

Another amazing movie on teamwork. In this movie, see how one team can work to develop other teams within an organization. In this true story movie see how the integration of races was a challenge for the football team and how they became a team that changed a community.

Coach Carter, starring Samuel L. Jackson (Leadership and Teamwork)

Samuel L. Jackson plays the controversial high school basketball coach Ken Carter who benched his undefeated team due to their collective poor academic record. Awesome in demonstrating the fact a leader needs to stay focused and stay the line they set in the beginning. By doing so the leader shows integrity and builds trust. Totally evident in this powerful team building and leadership movie.

Rudy, starring Sean Astin (Self development & Teamwork)

Rudy has always been told that he was too small to play college football. But he is determined to overcome the odds and fulfill his dream of playing for Notre Dame. This movie is one of the most effective movies to demonstrate the power of persistence and the ability to overcome all odds to accomplish your goals.
