How Well Do You Know Your Teammates

I have been talking about this for years in my 2 day workshops and it still amazes me how little most of us know about those we work with daily.  Take a minute and answer the following questions about those on your immediate team: Read More>

Four Traits of Effective Team Members

Effective team members of any team will demonstrate different traits.  Over the years certain traits have been known to surface on almost all teams.  Regardless if the team is a sports team, work team, special project team or volunteer team, these traits are the shining traits on them all. Getting Fired in Voicemail

What’s the affect on the rest of the team?

A couple of years ago I heard from a colleague that he had been fired in voice mail.  After asking him about this he told me that neither his immediate supervisor nor his second level supervisor had spoken with him about his productivity and yet this is the reason he was given for his dismissal.

Now understand that I am not defending the employee and maybe he should have been fired.  The problem once again is not what was done; rather it was how it was done.  Read More >

Hollywood and Teamwork

20 Blockbuster Movies to Advance Any Team

Teamwork manifests itself in many different ways.  Most noticeably we see it in sports and the sport most people view as a team sport is basketball, followed closely by football.  Well there are a lot of places to recognize teamwork in action.

To get a hold of the teamwork concept and find ways to create teamwork where you work, you need go no further than your mailbox.  Do I have your attention?  Movies are one of the greatest ways to grow and develop.  That’s right movies, and I don’t mean training movies although they do have a place in growth and development.  I’m talking about the movies you can get from Blockbuster or NETFLIX. Skill Versus Will

The Will of a Person will determine the Skills of a person

(Part one of two)

Think back to your first day on your current position.  When you arrived what was your skill level like?  Did you know everything you needed to know to do your job?

If you are like most people your skill level may have been adequate enough to get the job, yet not at the top level.  On the other hand your will level was likely off the scale.  Let’s take a look at these two driving forces in today’s business. Why Do Teams Fail?

- - And Yes They Will Fail- -

There is something to the old expression; show me someone who has not failed and I will show you someone who has not taken risks.  We have all failed at some point in our life.  Think back to your child hood and when you were learning to ride a two-wheeler.  Were you one of those kids (and I know a couple) who never used training wheels?  Now what about when you took off the training wheels – what happened?

If you were like me you fell – a lot – and did you give up?  Most likely not.  You kept going and learning from your mistakes.  The same applies in your team pursuit.  Teams fail from time to time and even those teams that are in the performing stage will falter occasionally.  Do not get up set when the process fails; just determine what went wrong and learn from it.  Read More >

Does MBWA really work?

MBWA – Management by Walking Around.  This concept has been around for over a hundred years.  Throughout the Civil War, even President Lincoln made it a point to “get out and circulate among the troops”.  In fact he relieved General John Fremont from his command in 1861 because in his words, “His cardinal mistake is that he isolates himself, and allows nobody to see him; and by which he does not know what is going on in the very matter he is dealing with.”

Today is really no different; leaders need to circulate among the troops.  Unfortunately instead of Management by Walking Around the troops see this as Management as Wandering Aimlessly.  Many leaders today are not taking a commanding presence in the front line of the workforce.  Read More

Why Do Employees Leave?

Think back on your career.  As you were working your way up your ladder of success why did you leave your first position?  Most likely it was money.  And as you progressed through your career you likely made a few moves based on future financial success.  Looking back was that the only reason for making the moves you made?    Read More >  >

Cultivating Effective Teams with Chemistry:
Where Business and Science Intersect

Part 1 of 2

Dream teams as they are so often called fail regularly.  This is true across the board in sports as well as in business.  Look at this past spring’s World Baseball Classic.  The best of the best from the United States lost to Mexico, South Korea and Canada.  In business, a fortune 500 company paid top dollar and hired the cream of the crop from the best business schools.  In essence a “Dream Team”, and yet it failed.  . . . Cultivating Effective Teams with Chemistry Part 2:
Four Ingredients to an Effective Team

Part 2 of 2

Well it happened again. The United States international basketball team lost to Greece and did not seem to be playing for the gold medal. By the way, there were zero NBA superstars on the Greece team.

One Washington DC sportscaster put it this way; “An effective team of average players can beat a group of superstars almost anytime.”

This illustrates what I was referring to in the previous article when Herb Brooks said in the movie Miracle; "All star teams fail because they rely solely on the individual's talent; the Soviets win because they take that talent and use it inside of a system that's designed for the betterment of the team."

Now this is just another example of teamwork in sports and I know it is easy to see the win/lose in sports. What about in your industry or organization, how easy is it to see the win/lose?... Read more here >>
